Speed Painting

I research on how do concept artist practice their skills and particular getting their idea quickly. It came out that concept artist engage in speed painting in order to get their idea visually. IAMAG is the premium source of inspiration for digital artist. It is where the professional shares their skills and also discuss the latest trend. I joined an active Facebook group created by them and I started my speed painting practice.

I aimed to have at least 2 speed painting a week, 30 minutes each and reflect on my practice. Below is my progress of the first speed painting when I started during Christmas break until present

Disney Classics : Colour Studies

I started to watch Disney classic as a study for colours and 2D animation.

During the colour studies, I found out how simple the the colour coordination in a scene but the story moment is strong in the single shot.

Maya Blocking for Paint Over

I wanted to try paint over on 3D modeled in Maya, so I start to block out my Maya scene.

I am confident in blocking, but when it comes to blocking my own Maya scene I realized I am giving myself pressure to block out a perfect scene I want.

In the end I just came up with rough blocking which I do not like.

Therefore, I proposed during my pitch to ask for 3D Modeller for simple block.

Below are my tests.

The progress is slow and not effective. I spent 4 hours just to block simple room.

Next I had Jake to help me in blocking out my scene. I gave him my layout design and he blocked out the environment for me.

(The progress will be documented under Development Tab)

Lighting up the Scene

After getting the blocked scene from Jake, I light up my scene. The scene was lighted by Jake at first but his lighting took too much time to render.

Therefore, I decided to light up my own scene and get the mood that I want in the scene.

During the lighting process, I try to create a different sun direction to indicate different time of the day.

Morning : Warm and Soft.

Bed side usually is the first to get hit by the sunlight. (according to Feng Shui believe, so the person will be able to wake up early every morning)

Evening : Warm

The sun is setting, the shadow or highlight in the different direction

Night : Cool

Shadow can be formed by streetlight or moonlight. Highlight should be softer.

This is an accidental piece where area light placed in between the wall. I thought it might be worth to keep as it looks like the light came from a light source with a lot of holes.

The next test is try to get the kind of lighting I want to have in my shot.

The development process of painting on 3D models will be found under DEVELOPMENT TAB.
