Linear and Non Linear Storytelling. 

 

Linear Storytelling :

Storyline flows from A(start) to B(rising/climax) to C(resolution) in sequence.

Almost all of featured film and animation works in linear format.

In most disney animation film uses Linear storytelling.

 

For example I try to plot out Snow White and the 7 dwarfs in Linear Storytelling

 

Snow white in Linear Storytelling.

 

Start : Snow white is introduced as living together with the Wicked Queen. The was a prince who was atttracted to Snow white. Later when she know that the Queen is trying to kill her. She ran away into the woods.

 

Rising : Snow white ran into the woods alone and found a small house. She sleeps as she is too tired, later when she found out 7 little dwarfs she live happily with them. 

 

Climax : The queen found out where Snow White is and plan to make a poison apple to kill her. The climax happen when the queen serve Snow white the apple while 7 dwarfs figure out and try to chase the queen.  

 

Resolution : The queen died falling off the cliff, Snow White was sleeping in the coffin. The resolution of the story is the prince wake Snow White up by kissing her. That is how the film end in happily ever after.

 

 

Non Linear Storytelling : 

Non linear storytelling is focusing more on creating an effect or mood of the story instead of carry out the story plot importantanly. 

Many short experimental films lies in this category.

 

Personally I found that the movie LIfe of Pi falls on this category.The reason was the the entire movie was created with visual effects and CG effects. I was impressed with the scene and the mood rather than the storyline. 

 

 

I look into the the theorist and name the film that I feel that portray the plot.

 

The Seven Basic Plots by Christopher Booker: Why we tell stories?

 

Overcoming the Monster - the hero in the story wil always able to win over the the villain or monster when at first the villain had affect the hero family, or hero society. 

In my point of view I will say the movie "Kung fu Panda" has this plot.

 

 

Rags to Riches - the main protagonist will usually portray as poor in term strength, wealth or power at first, later after going through the challenges the character able to gain respect in the end.

For example: Cinderella 

 

 

The Quest : In this plot, the protagonist has to go through alot of obstacles and success in the end. 

I will strongly say that the movie "Hunger Games". The main character have to kill each other in order to survive in the end. 

 

 

Voyage and return : The hero have to travel to a different place than norms and end up coming back with experience after overcoming the fear.

I would say "Incidious", although the film genre is horror. I found that the character have to travel back in memories and coming back to real life and understanding what actually happen to him.

 

 

Comedy: A happy and funny, humorous storyline. 

For example : Growns Up

 

 

Tragedy : The hero in the story where dignity goes down hill and death is a happy ending. 

 

 

Re-birth : The character will be show as an antagonist character at first and later on redeem itself as a hero character. 

For example: Megamind

In our group work, i would say our animation do have non linear story telling as we wre meant to bring out the message rather than the a strong storyline. 

If I were have to choose a plot, rag to riches. In our stories, woman had potray as poor to the society but the woman is able to gain through experience and brings the good to the society in term of design, architecture and so on.
